"At a certain point it becomes futile to try and clear a root infested sewer with a snake machine...."Many homeowners are aware they have a root problem in their main sewer: toilet backups, showers drains plugged up. There have been many visits from the plumber and his rooter machine.
Trouble is, the rooter blades are unable to actually completely clean the roots out.... they just 'kind of poke a hole' in the root mass to give you temporary relief. Meantime the roots keep growing and growing. At a certain point, the mess becomes too much and the rooter machine simply cannot penetrate.... That's when trenchless sewer replacement becomes a fast and highly effective solution..... two options are available; RELINING and PIPE BURSTING. 
Relining your sewer.... a few facts.
As pointed out, relining is primarily used when sewer problems are under the street; where your line connects to the city sewer system.
Having to dig and make repairs would cost you many, many thousands of dollars and require special permits from the city. Instead we can create a 'pipe within a pipe'. Using high pressure we literally blow an epoxy resin impregnated 'sock' or tube down the length of the pipe.This adheres to the inside of the sewer pipe and hardens.... thus creating a pipe within a pipe! Only one hole needs to be dug for this process to be carried out. 
Pipe bursting.... total pipe replacement!
Generally this is the preferred method of sewer replacement.
Two holes are dug, one where the sewer pipe joins to the 3 inch iron pipe exiting the house, the other beyond where the root stoppage is located. Normally, the entire 4 inch clay pipe is replaced to the point where it joins with the 6 inch city sewer line. A cable, attatched to the front of a steel bursting head, is fed down the clay pipe. Also attatched, to the back of the head is the new Polyethelyne replacement pipe, in one long continuous section. It is highly flexible. The cable is attatched to the very powerful equipment which pulls the bursting head through the old clay pipe with the replacement pipe attatched. Viola!.... you have a new sewer!

How do roots penetrate the sewer line?....
The old clay style sewer lines consist of 3 to 4 ft sections that are fitted together with the joins encased in concrete. These however, over time, being buried underground, loosen. The concrete bond allows moisture seepage. Roots are aggressive in seeking water. A few tendrils may initially get into the join. They continue to grow and multiply and force their way into the pipe. The process simply continues over time. At a certain point, the root mass can be so great as to actually crack the clay pipe.
